Illustration Friday - CAPTURE

I have been working on this study which is a graphite drawing for the past week, and was happy to see that for once something I am working on fits the week's topic perfectly! I am starting to develop this character - M. Betterave (Mr. Beet) - as the principal in a black comedy/tragedy series of miniature paintings. M. Betterave eats beetles and drinks red ink for dinner.

I am hoping this series will bridge the gap between the lighthearted silliness of the work I am posting on this blog, with the darker, more introspective work on my fine art blog which is here. Eventually, I suppose I will have to decide which blog to post this series of paintings on, but for the time being M. Betterave can reside here.

The series will eventually be shown as a body of work in a traditional gallery setting although a folio of prints or a small book would be a nice accompaniment.

This is such an interesting picture. Great attention to detail. Its so different from your cartooning style, but I like it just as much. Very nice.

We're on the same buggy wavelength, Gabrielle! Love your new header! I need to work on mine. And figure out why it doesn't show up on my static links. (better call my 12 year old for help!)

I certainly think this would be a wonderful series. I love the attention to the details you've given. (and as a side note, I very much like your other blog - vry surreal and emotional)

Can't get blood from a turnip, but red ink from a beet! What a surreal imagination you have. I love this character and the back story. Such an evolved beet.

A beetle portrait, beetles in a curio, beetles saltshaker, Mr. Betterave enjoys his beetles, eating them seems to be the final act of adoration. I love this strange and weird and very cool piece of work-can't wait to see the further adventures of Mr. Betterave, WOW!
